Truck signs and flags 

Width: over 8 feet 6 inches(2.6 m)  require flags by day and lights by night on the extremities of the load. Over 10 feet(3.05 m)  – in addition to flags and lights requires a dimensional sign on the front and rear of the hauling unit and load. Over 11 feet (3.35 m) – must have in addition to the above one or more amber flashing or rotating lights, on top of the cab, turned on while traveling. 

Height: over 13 feet 16 inches (4.15 m)  must notify local utility companies along the route at last 3 days in advance of intended move. Clearance must be obtained from power, telephone, rail and traffic light authorities. For loads over 19 feet 6 inches (5.95 m)  in height special conditions will probably apply.  Check with permit office.  Annual over height permits up to 16 feet 4 inches  are available. 

Length: all long loads over 111 feet 7 inches (34 m) in overall length require dimensional signs on the front and rear of the vehicle or load. Flags by day on the extremities of the load. Lights at night with a max. Distance of 24 feet 10 inches (7.32 m) between flags or lights. For overhang of over 5 feet(1.55 m), flags are requires by day and lights at night.   

When escorts required 

Width: loads over 12 feet 7 inches (3.85 m) require one lead pilot vehicle on a single lane highway. On a multi lane highway one trail vehicle required. Loads over 14 feet 7 inches (4.45 m) require one pilot and one trail vehicle on a single lane highway. On multi lane highways one trail vehicle is required.  For loads greater than 18 feet (5.5 m)  both a pilot and trail vehicle is required on all highway types. Max. Width allowed by permit is 24 feet(7.32 m) except for used buildings and fabricated homes. Some exceptions are made depending on the type of load and distance traveled. Check with permit office. Usually the only loads over 24 feet (7.32 m)given permits are high pressure vessels. These will have additional conditions and probably additional pilot vehicle requirements.  

Height: escorts traveling as pole cars are not used in Alberta. Contact local utility companies for information and routing for you particular load. There are also various “high load corridor” routes established in this province.

Length: loads over 111 feet 7 inches (34 m) require a trail vehicle on single lane highways. Loads over 124 feet 8 inches(38 m)  require both a pilot vehicle and a trail vehicle on single lane highways. Loads exceeding 137 feet 10 inches (42 m)  are restricted to daylight travel only on single lane highways. Loads over 170 feet 8 inches(52 m)  require a trail vehicle on multi-lane highways. Night travel is allowed on multi-lane highways.         

For empty heavy haul vehicles over 124 feet 8 inches (38 m) up to 170 feet 8 inches (52 m)  a trail vehicle is required on single lane highways. Over 170 feet 8 inches (52 m) both a pilot and trail vehicles are required and no night travel is allowed. 

 for empty heavy haul vehicles over 170 feet 8 inches (52 m) a trail vehicle is required on multi-lane highways. Night travel is allowed on multi-lane highways. Check your permit for any additional conditions. 

Overhang: effective rear overhang exceeding 21 feet 4 inches (6.5 m)requires a trail vehicle. Effective rear overhang exceeding 29 feet 6 inches (9 m) requires both a pilot and trail vehicle and travel restricted to daylight hours only.       

Special requirements 

Width: loads exceeding 14 feet 7 inches (4.45 m) wide must not detain school buses. Travel is daylight hours only. Except for emergency situations and power line lifting, parking on provincial highways is permitted only at designated truck pull outs. 
If a highway or bridge is too narrow to accommodate both the wide load and other traffic at the same time, no movement is allowed from 7:45 am to 8:45 am and from 3:00 pm to 3:45 pm on school days. For some of the greater widths, additional pilot vehicles, police escorts and special curfew may also apply. 
Check with the permit office for the specifics of your move. 

When the movement of the over dimensional load will reduce the surface width for oncoming traffic to 10 feet (3.05 m)or less on two lane highways, one addition lead pilot will be required to accompany the load on those highway sections.  

Some of those highways can be –   highway #21, highway #18; highway #36, highway #44 and highway #8555 

Double check your permit for your particular move. 

Convoys:  convoy movements are allowed for loads up to a maximum of 24 feet wide (7.32 m). A convoy of two loads requires three pilot vehicles. A convoy of three loads requires four pilot vehicles. A minimum distance of 1 mile(1.5 km)  between separate convoys is to be maintained. The combined length of all loads within a convoy cannot exceed 328 feet(100 m). Three loads is the maximum allowed in any one convoy. 

Height: for loads for 19 feet 6 inches (5.95 m) in height, must double check permit for any special conditions. 

Use of high corridor route: permission to move must be obtained from the power companies. The power company has the authority and may temporarily halt a move when it considers conditions to be unsafe for the move to continue.  Decisions of the power company shall be final. Load height may be measured by power company or employees of Alberta transportation to ensure the safety of the move. All counter-flow travel requires a police escort. 

Highway #63: the Fort McMurray  1780-799-8695 highway #63 and highway #55 has special curfew requirements in addition  to the regular over dimensional curfews. There is no travel from 7:00 am -9:00 am and 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm   Super loads- over width, over height 18 feet south bound (5.5 m) or 17 feet 8 inches (5.4 ) northbound require traffic lights turned contact city 780-799-8695  24 hours in advance . over weight and/or over length are taken through Fort McMurray after midnight. 

Bad weather: loads exceeding 14 feet 7 inches  wide (4.45 m)or 5.3 ( 17 feet 5  )  high shall not operate during adverse weather conditions when visibility due to snow or fog is less than 492 feet (150 m) or the roadway is covered with snow, sleet or ice which impedes the driver’s or other motorists ability to drive in a safe manner. The carrier is required to make  a reasonable effort to determine the driving conditions on the route. Vehicles must not be dispatched when adverse conditions are known to exist on the route. Drivers encountering unexpected adverse conditions must stop at the next safe location. (or as directed by an authorized Alberta transportation staff member or a peace officer) and wait for the adverse conditions to abate. Wide loads must not stop on the side of a highway such that part of the load extends into a driving lane or shoulder. 

Flat objects: flat commodities must have posts or other material affixed to the commodity that extend 3 feet 10 inches (1.2 m)  above the road surfaces with flags attached that outline the extremities of the load. 

Other: conditions for deliminator signs for thin wide loads: 

Definitions: 

  1. “load” means the item being carried by a vehicle and does not include any portion of the vehicle.
  2. “thickness” means the vertical dimension of the solid portion of the load. Thin vertical members such as columns, rails, posts, pipe, etc. Are not to be considered as the solid portion of the load.
  3. Delineator signs are required:
  4. A) when a load exceeds 14 feet 6 inches (4.45m) in width and when 2 feet(0.6m) or more of the portion of the load beyond the edge of the vehicle is less than 3 feet 3 inches  in thickness
  5. B) when load exceeds 14 feet 7 inches (4.45m) in width and is greater than 3 feet 3 inches (1m) in thickness but has a piece protruding beyond the general outline of the load and when 2 feet (0.6m) or more of the protrusion is less than 3 feet 3 inches in thickness

2) when delineator signs are required, the signs are to be mounted at the front and at the rear of the load, at the extreme edges of the load(ie: all four corners) in such a manner that the front signs are clearly visible to the oncoming traffic, and the rear signs are clearly visible to the traffic approaching from the rear. 

3) the requirements to use these signs is in addition to the requirements of the commercial vehicle dimension and weight regulation for the use of safety items such as flags, lights. Signs and escort vehicles. 

4) sign requirements 

  1. A) the sign is to be 0.6 meters wide by 0.6 meters high
    b) the sign is to have red and white diagonal stripes
    c) the diagonal stripes are to be of equal width. 
    E) the sign is to be made from rigid and reflective material 
    f) the signs are to be mounted so that the stripes run from the top inside edge of the sign towards the bottom outside edge of the sign. 

                                             escort vehicle requirements 

two way communication must be maintained between all vehicles involved in a over dimensional load move. Radios must meet communication Canada standards. Reflective vests must be worn when outside the escort vehicle while engaged in activity with respect to the operation of the over dimensional load. A vehicle while engaged as an escort vehicle must not tow any trailer or other vehicle. The escort must not carry any load, that in any manner, obscures any lights or signs that the escort is required to be equipped with. In addition to the 3 flags for traffic control, must have 1 addition flag for each crew member. Only  the outboard(flashing) lights are to be used under normal weather and highway conditions. Inboard(beacons/strobe) are to be used only when turning on or off a highway in or out of a site, when flagging, during a mechanical breakdown, or under adverse weather or highway conditions. Outboard lights to be rated for 12.5 volts, 3 amps and 0.50 candela with a rated life of 300 hours. Beacons must consist of standard 8 inch(203 m) rotating amber lights with 2 seal beam units per lamp. To use the black and yellow “oversize load” inserts in the pilot sign you must get an annual permit from the Alberta permit office. An indicator light for the pilot sign lights must be in the cab to let operator know that the flashing or beacon lights are turned on. 
Additional safety equipment: recommended that safety glasses, steel toed boots and a handheld radio to be carried. As well as maps, extra clothing, bedding, water, winter survival kit and a cell phone for emergencies.  

Ab regulations: commercial vehicle – dimensions & weight regulations (ar315/2002)(traffic safety act) – escorts : section 16 

new notes:  

1) pilot vehicle operators have the authority to direct traffic under section 60 of the traffic safety act, use of highway and rules of the road regulation, while on the job escorting a load. 

2) pilot vehicle operators traveling through urban municipalities with a posted speed limit of 60 km/hour or less are not required to wear their seat belts as per section 82(2)(a) of the vehicle equipment regulations, while performing the duties of a pilot or trail vehicle. 

Travel time 

Daytime/daylight travel is from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. No travel all year after 3:00 pm, to midnight on Friday for loads over 12 feet 7 inches(3.85 m). Travel may resume on Saturday as per your permit conditions. No travel Sunday and statutory holidays for loads over 12 feet 7 inches(3.85 m). Daytime – daylight travel only for loads over 14 feet 7 inches (4.45m) unless otherwise noted on permit. 

Night travel is allowed for long loads. Unrestricted length on multi-lane highways is allowed with one trail vehicle. On single lane highways a long load can be up to 137 feet 10 inches (42 m) with both a pilot vehicle and a trail vehicle. If load is wide as well, then width restrictions will apply. 
Sunday travel is allowed for long loads. 

Special curfews for loads exceeding 12 feet 7 inches (3.85 m)wide on: 
Anthony Henday drive in Edmonton 
Deerfoot trail in Calgary 
stony trail in Calgary . These are under provincal jurisdiction

No travel  7:00 am-9:00 am and 3:30 am – 6:00 pm Monday to Friday 

Cities requiring permits

Permits required for any load exceeding legal limits for travel in and through the city of Edmonton. Annual permits are available. Loads traveling with pilot vehicles: both wide and/or long 
no travel 7:00 am- 9:00 am and 3:30 pm –6:00 pm 
 Anthony Henday drive Highway 216 is under provincial jurisdiction      

Farm equipment requires permits and also requires pilot vehicles within city limits when over legal size limits. 

Loads over 16 feet 5 inches(5 m) in height require utility permission and routing to go through Edmonton 
loads over 18 feet(5.5 m) wide can only go through from: 
1:00 am – 6:00 am 

Calgary  1-403-268-2489 hours are 24/7 

Loads over 12 feet (3.7 m) wide and 15 feet high(4.6 m) 
no travel       6:30 am-9:00 am and 3:30 pm –6:00 pm 

All loads over legal width, length, height must get permits for travel within Calgary. Two to three business days are recommended for approval of routing and conditions to travel. 
Loads over 17 feet 5 inches(5.3 m) in height must contact the following for authorization to move: en max 1-403-2568-2822 and Telus 611 
these loads move from 12:00 am- 6:00 am. 

Loads in excess of 24 feet(7.32 m) wide may be required to get police escorts in the city 
Deerfoot trail and stony trail are under provincial jurisdiction when requesting permit routing. 

Annual permits are available up to the following dimensions:    
                       19 feet 8 inches wide(6 m) 
                       16 feet high(4.9 m) 
                       131 feet 4 inches long(40 m)

Loads over dimensions below are required to use the high and wide corridor in red deer, curfew time for moves of these sizes is :  

4 am – 7 am seven days a week    
with restrictions on statutory holidays. City requires minimum of three days notice. City engineer may add addition conditions to a move.

For large farm equipment going in to the agricultural park off highway #595 – double check with city for any requirements.

when hauling through the city of Lethbridge on provincial highways only, an exemption of the permit requirement may be granted. However, you must still contact the city of Lethbridge prior to going through.

Whitecourt-  all loads in excess of 14 feet 7 inches(4.45 m) wide and/or 16 feet 5 inches(5 .3 m) high travelling on highway #32 and or highway  #43 
no travel                7 am-9 am and 3 pm-4:30 pm  on school days. 

Wainwright- loads in excess of 17 feet 5 inches (5.3 m) high must contact of the RCMP in wainwright prior to moving. The carrier is responsible to have the traffic lights rotated. The carrier is responsible for traffic control on all approaches. 

Tofield- parking within town limits is not allowed at any time 
no travel            7:45 am- 9 am and 11:30 am – 1 pm  
                                 and 3 pm – 3:45 pm on school days 

No travel          highway#834 from Tofield to highway #16 
                               7:45 am – 9 am and 3 pm –3:45 pm  on school days. 

Manufactured homes 

A “manufactured home” is a single or multi-section home that  is fabricated indoors utilizing on-line assembly processes within a factory setting.  
 overall width” is the greatest width of the home, including all appendages, eaves and architectural elements. 
box width” is the greatest width of the home including all appendages except for: eaves that are at least 9 feet 6 inches(2.9 m) above the roadway and architectural elements that are not more than 10 feet(3.05 m) when measured along the length of the house.

architectural elements” are any element attached to the home that projects past the edge of the box of the home by no more than 16 inches(2.9 m) – these include light fixtures, decorative columns, bay windows. On single section homes all architectural elements must be located on one side of the house only and be positioned on the ditch side during transport. 

Width – box width shall not exceed 24 feet(7.3 m). Overall width shall not exceed 27 feet(8.2 m). When overall width, including eaves, exceeds over 24 feet(7.3 m) there is no travel allowed on highway #2 between Calgary and Edmonton or on the Deerfoot trail. Over 24 feet(7.3 m) three escorts are required and permission from rural and urban municipal road authorities must be obtained. 

Length –  length of the home, excluding eaves, shall not exceed 80 feet(24.4 m). Length of the home, including eaves, shall not exceed 84 feet(24.4 m). The loaded overall length of the towing vehicle and home shall not exceed 114 feet 10 inches(35 m). 

Height – total height shall not exceed 17 feet 5 inches(5.3 m). 
Overhang- the effective overhang from the center of the axle group to the end of the home, not including the eaves, shall not exceed 27 feet 11 inches(8.5 m). 
General conditions-  on two lane highways daylight travel only. On multi-lane highways no travel allowed from one half hour past sunset to 3 am. Speed shall not exceed 50 miles(80 km/hour) per house. No travel during adverse weather conditions. Dolly systems will be allowed to load pilot vehicle for the empty return trip. 
Special conditions –  no travel allowed on the peace river bridge in peace river. All dolly systems and trailers require a trailer identification plate. Valid inspection certificate is required on all units. 
Additional conditions-  specifics regarding the towing vehicle, hauling equipment, dolly systems, warning devices and permanent axles are contained in the permit. Escort conditions may be different from regular oversize loads check the permit  for the conditions of your move. 

Buildings – ready to move homes 

Width-  when width is greater than 20 feet(6.1 m) permission from rural and urban municipal road authorities must be obtained. 
Weight – if gross vehicle weight is greater than the registered weight of the vehicle either an overload permit or a registration permit to increase licensed weight must be obtained. When weight exceeds the allowable weight exceeds the allowable weight for the axle combinations, more wheels must be added. Equipment must have sufficient capacity to carry the weight of the structure being moved. 
Equipment-   
beams and beam extensions  
        a) the beams shall be made of steel except that garages under 24 feet(7.32 m) may be moved on timber beams 
        b) extensions shall not support more than 1/3 of the building 
        c) dollies shall be placed under the main bean only.  
Bunks shall be made from a double solid beam and shall be securely attached to the main beams. 
Dollies  all dollies used to move buildings other than garages under 24 feet (7.32 m) wide shall have dual tires. 
Tires 
         a)all tires on individual dollies shall be the same size 
         b) all tires shall meet or exceed cvsa standards with a minimum of 1/32 inch of thread 
breaks 
        a) if dollies do not have breaks the speed is limited to a max. Of 38 miles(60 km/hour) per hour 
        b) axles that are permanently attached to a frame must have breaks 
trailers 
all buildings over 24 feet(7.32 m) wide require trailers with a minimum track width of 10 feet (3.05 m) or beams and dollies. Buildings over 28 feet(8.54 m) require a minimum of 16 wheels. 
All equipment such as timbers or beams and dollies and special building trailers used solely to transport buildings are exempt from the use of tail lights, brake lights, signal lights, mud flaps and brakes provided they are accompanied by a trail vehicle. Movement is restricted to daylight hours only. 
Secondary towing unit-  for emergency purposes a secondary towing unit must accompany each building move when the width is over 24 feet(7.32 m). The secondary towing unit must be a minimum of 5 tons. 
Night moves-  no movement from sunset to midnight. No parking on a provincial highway. Jumbo flashing lights to be mounted at each side of the building. Red lights to the rear. Amber lights to the front. Minimum size has to be 4 inches x 6 inches(102 mm x 162 mm) rectangular or 7 inches (175 mm) diameter. The lights are to be placed within 4 inches(102 mm) of the edge of the building. 
Escort vehicle requirements – three escorts are required for buildings greater than 24 feet wide(7.32 m), including eaves. All escort vehicle requirements shall be met. One of the escort vehicles may be the secondary towing unit, but it may not be used as an escort if it is used to assist the main towing unit on a provincial highway at any time during the move or carries any load except for blocking and timbers. Two buildings may be moved in a convoy providing they do not exceed 24 feet(7.32 m) (including eaves). Two buildings moved in a convoy must be accompanied by a minimum of three escort vehicles. 
Additional conditions:  
transporter must obtain permission from local police or RCMP prior to the move. Caution is to be exercised in the crossing of bridges. This entails bringing the loaded vehicle to a complete stop in close proximity to the bridge to be crossed and proceeding cautiously. Power, telephone and railway companies must be notified of the move. Any transmission lines that have to be lifted or removed to assure the safe passage of the building must be done so by the owner of the line. Move must not detain school buses. Additional conditions and/or restrictions may be applied. Always double check with permit office and read the permit carefully.
