Northwest territories
Width: over 8 feet 6 inches(2.6m) require flags by day and lights by night on the extremities of the load. Over 10 feet 6 inches(3.2m) in addition to the flags and lights requires a dimensional sign on the front and rear of the hauling unit and load. Permit is required for all loads over 10 feet 6 inches(3.2m).
Height: from 13 feet 7 inches (4.15m)to 17 feet(5.18m) load must clear all overhead wires or structures. Over height permit is required for all loads over 13 feet 9 inches(4.2m). In addition to above when going off main routing must notify local utility companies to confirm height clearances
Length: lengths over 82 feet (25m) require permits. Cannot exceed effective overhang. (effective overhang is 35% measured from the king pink to the center of the axle group and then from the axle group to the end of the load). Load require flags by day and lights by night on the extremities of the load. Straight truck trailer combinations exceeding 68 feet 10 inches(21m) require a permit
When escorts required
Width: loads over 10 feet 6 inches(3.2m) require escorts except on the main wide load corridors – highway #1 to yellowknife and highway #2 to hay river where loads can be up to 12 feet 6 inches(3.8m). Loads over 12 feet 7 inches(3.85m) require escorts to lead the load by a distance of 2626 feet(800m) to 3282 feet(100m). Loads from 14 feet 7 inches(4.45m) to 18 feet 5 inches(5.5m) require both a lead pilot and a trail vehicle. All loads over 18 feet 5 inches (5.5m) also require pre-authorization from the enterprise weigh scale.
Height: escorts not required when load is only high.
Length: loads over 95 feet 1 inch(29m) require a trail vehicle at all times.
Escort vehicle requirements
Two way communication must be maintained between all vehicles involved in an over dimensional load move. Reflective vests must be worn when outside the escort vehicle while engaged in activity with respect to the operation of the over dimensional load. A vehicle while engaged as an escort vehicle must not tow any trailer or other vehicle. The escort must not carry any load, that in any manner, obscures any lights or signs that the escort is required to be equipped with. The red and white “d” sign inserts are currently the only ones allowed on pilot vehicle in the northwest territories.
Additional safety equipment: recommended that safety glasses, steel toed boots and a handheld radio to be carried. As well as maps, extra clothing, bedding, water, winter survival kit and a cell phone for emergencies.
Travel time
There are currently no travel restrictions due to night or holiday travel. No travel during bad weather or weather advisories for over dimensional loads.
